Eye patches: how to apply them, how long to leave them on and which to choose

Hydrogel eye patches go on clean, dry skin, just under the eye, without touching the eyelid or the lashes, and stay on for 15 to 20 minutes. Their main job is to hydrate and refresh the eye area, for a look that seems more rested. Here is exactly how to apply them, how often to use them, how to choose them and the mistakes that spoil the effect.

What are eye patches for?

An eye patch is a small crescent-shaped mask, soaked in or made of a gel rich in water and hydrating ingredients. Placed under the eye, it keeps those ingredients in contact with the skin for several minutes, whereas a cream spreads in a thin layer. The skin around the eyes is among the thinnest on the face: it dries out quickly and shows tiredness fast.

  • Hydrate: the gel brings water and ingredients that hold on to it, which softens the skin and smooths fine lines caused by dryness.
  • Refresh: the cooling feeling is instant, even more so if the patches come straight from the fridge.
  • Prep for make-up: well-hydrated skin takes concealer better, so it settles less into creases.

To be clear about their limits: patches do not treat the cause of dark circles or puffiness. They offer a moment of hydration and freshness, not a treatment. A pilot study of a hydrogel mask (Rokita et al., 2026) measured better-hydrated skin over repeated use, but the effect of each application was short-lived.

How to apply eye patches in 5 steps

  1. Cleanse and dry your skin: remove eye make-up, then pat dry. On oily skin or over a cream, the patch slides and does not stick well.
  2. Pick up the patch with clean fingers, or with the spatula if your jar comes with one. Close the jar straight away so the remaining patches do not dry out.
  3. Place it under the eye, 2 to 3 millimetres below the lower lashes, without touching the eyelid or the lashes. The curved edge follows the line of the eye.
  4. Smooth it gently with your fingertips to push out air bubbles, without pulling the skin.
  5. Relax for 15 to 20 minutes, head tilted back slightly or lying down, so the patch does not slip.

Which way round? The narrower end goes towards the inner corner of the eye, by the nose, and the wider end towards the temple. You can also turn it vertically or place it between the brows: a hydrogel patch has no single right way, as long as it never touches the eye.

How long should you leave eye patches on?

Allow 15 to 20 minutes, the time given for most hydrogel patches, ours included. Beyond that, the gel starts to dry and may draw back some of the water it gave the skin. So do not sleep in them, unless the packaging says the patch is designed for overnight use. If the patch still feels very moist after 20 minutes, take it off anyway.

How often per week, and morning or evening?

Two to three times a week is enough to keep the eye area hydrated. Before an event, after a flight or a week of short nights, you can use them several days in a row if your skin tolerates them well.

In the morning, they give a fresh start before make-up. In the evening, they fit into a moment of calm, before your night cream. There is no wrong time: choose the one when you really have 15 quiet minutes.

Should you keep eye patches in the fridge?

It is not essential, but it is pleasant. Put the closed jar in the fridge 15 to 30 minutes before use, or keep it cool in summer, unless the label says otherwise. The cold adds to the cooling feeling. Never in the freezer: the gel hardens and can be harsh on thin skin.

What to do after removing the patches

Peel the patch off gently, from the inner corner outwards. Do not rinse: pat the leftover gel in with your fingertips until it is absorbed. Then apply your eye cream or usual moisturiser to lock in the water, followed by make-up or your night cream.

Reusable or single-use eye patches?

Classic hydrogel patches, sold in jars or sachets, are single-use: once applied, they have released their gel and may carry bacteria. Do not put them back in the jar.

Reusable eye patches are usually made of silicone. They bring nothing on their own: you place them over a serum or cream to stop it evaporating. Wash them with lukewarm water and mild soap after each use. They are two different products: the first hydrates, the second helps a treatment work better.

How to choose the best eye patches

Hydrogel or sheet?

Hydrogel is a soft, slightly translucent gel that hugs the eye area and stays put without slipping. Sheet patches (fabric or cellulose) are soaked in a liquid serum: they are thinner, but they dry faster and cling less well. For regular use and a cooling effect, hydrogel is often the most comfortable.

Ingredients to look for

  • Aloe vera: rich in water, valued for its soothing, cooling effect.
  • Collagen: a hydrating ingredient that leaves a light veil on the skin (see below).
  • Hyaluronic acid: it holds water at the skin's surface, for a temporary plumping effect.

What collagen applied to the skin really does

Collagen in cosmetics is a large molecule: it does not pass through the skin to join the collagen in the dermis. So it does not replace the collagen the skin loses with age. What it does do is hold water and form a supple film on the surface, which hydrates and makes the skin feel softer. It is a good hydrating ingredient, and should be judged as one.

That is the approach behind our aloe vera and collagen eye patches: hydrogel patches in a jar, combining aloe vera for freshness and collagen for hydration, to leave on clean skin for 15 to 20 minutes.

Common mistakes

  • Placing the patch too close to the lashes: the gel can slide into the eye and sting.
  • Leaving it on too long: a patch that dries out stops hydrating, quite the opposite.
  • Applying it over cream or make-up: it sticks poorly and the ingredients get through less well.
  • Rinsing afterwards: you wash off exactly what hydrates.
  • Leaving the jar open or putting a used patch back in it: the patches dry out and hygiene suffers.

Sensitive skin: precautions

Do a test on the inside of your wrist or a small area the day before the first use. A slight passing tingle can happen; burning, redness or itching means you should remove the patch at once and rinse with cool water. Avoid using patches on irritated or damaged skin, or straight after exfoliating. If your skin often feels tight, strengthen its barrier first: our article on skin that feels tight after cleansing explains what to do. If a reaction does not settle, see a doctor or dermatologist.

Where patches fit in your routine

The right moment: after cleansing and toner, before serum and cream. They slot naturally into a simplified 5-step Korean beauty routine, or as an occasional extra in a skinimalist routine that sticks to the essentials. For a quiet moment, apply your aloe vera hydrogel eye patches while your day cream waits its turn.

Frequently asked questions

How long should you leave eye patches on?

Between 15 and 20 minutes. Any longer and the gel dries and stops hydrating. Then remove them and pat in the leftover gel.

Which way round do eye patches go?

Narrow end towards the inner corner of the eye, wide end towards the temple, curved edge 2 to 3 millimetres below the lower lashes, without touching the eyelid.

How many times a week should you use eye patches?

Two to three times a week for upkeep. Occasionally, several days in a row if your skin tolerates them well.

Can you sleep with eye patches on?

Not with classic hydrogel patches: they dry out after 20 minutes and can slip towards the eye. Only patches designed for overnight use can stay on longer.

Are eye patches reusable?

Hydrogel patches are single-use. Only silicone patches can be reused, placed over a serum and washed after each use.

Should you rinse after eye patches?

No. Pat the leftover gel in until it is absorbed, then apply your usual cream.
