Everyone has an asymmetrical face. It is an anatomical fact, not an abnormality. The left and right sides of your face are never perfectly identical — and they never will be.

But there is a difference between natural asymmetry (a few millimetres, invisible to the naked eye) and functional asymmetry — the kind that deepens over time because of poor postural habits, unbalanced muscular tension or uneven lymphatic drainage.

Functional asymmetry is the one you can do something about. Not with surgery. Not with filters. With targeted exercises that rebalance the muscles, the tone and the circulation on each side of the face.

Why your face is asymmetrical

The human face is not symmetrical — no face is. Facial imaging studies have shown that even the faces considered most harmonious show differences of 2 to 5% between the two sides. That is normal, it is genetic, and it is what makes every face unique.

But beyond that baseline asymmetry, several factors deepen the imbalance over time:

One-sided chewing. If you always chew on the same side, the masseter (the jaw muscle) develops more on that side. After years, the difference is visible: a squarer jaw on one side, a finer one on the other.

Sleeping position. Always sleeping on the same side compresses the tissue for 6 to 8 hours. The cheekbone is flattened, the cheek is squashed, lymphatic drainage is blocked. Over the years, the "sleeping" side loses volume compared with the other.

Habitual facial expressions. Smiling more on one side, raising one brow more than the other, frowning asymmetrically — these micro-expressions, repeated thousands of times a day, carve uneven lines and strengthen certain muscles at the expense of their opposites.

Stress and bruxism. Clenching the jaw (consciously or at night) contracts the muscles unevenly. The dominant side becomes bulkier and tighter.

Uneven ageing. The side of the face most exposed to the sun (the one by the window in the car, for example) ages faster. The loss of collagen and elasticity is uneven, which accentuates asymmetry with age.

Structural vs functional asymmetry

This distinction is essential to understanding what exercises can — and cannot — correct.

Structural asymmetry concerns the bones. A longer jaw on one side, a more prominent zygomatic bone (cheekbone), a larger eye socket. Exercises have no effect whatsoever on bone structure. Only maxillofacial surgery can alter skeletal architecture.

Functional asymmetry concerns the muscles, soft tissue and fluids. A more developed masseter on one side, a cheek puffier from fluid retention, a lower brow caused by muscular tension. This is the asymmetry that exercises act on.

In practice, most visible asymmetries are functional — or a mix of the two. And even when a structural component exists, muscular rebalancing and drainage can considerably soften how the asymmetry is perceived.

Self-assessment: identifying your imbalances

Before starting the exercises, take 5 minutes to identify your specific imbalances. That is what will let you target the right exercises and adjust the intensity side by side.

The photo test:

  1. Take a front-facing selfie, in natural light, with no expression (neutral face)
  2. Draw a vertical line down the centre of the face (nose-chin axis) in a photo-editing app
  3. Compare the two halves: brow height, cheek volume, position of the mouth corners, size of the jaw

The mirror test:

  1. Facing a mirror, cover each half of your face in turn with your hand
  2. Look at each half in isolation: which one looks more "droopy"? Puffier? Tighter?

The jaw test:

  1. Place your hands on both sides of the jaw and clench your teeth
  2. Is one muscle bigger than the other? That is the sign of one-sided chewing

Exercise 1 — Rebalancing the masseter

Target: an asymmetrical jaw (one side squarer than the other)

The masseter is the most powerful muscle in the face. It is also the one that creates the most visible asymmetry when it is out of balance.

The protocol:

Hypertrophied side (the bigger one):

  1. Place 3 fingers on the masseter (the bulge that appears when you clench your teeth)
  2. Make deep circular pressures for 30 seconds — the aim is to relax the muscle
  3. Open your mouth wide, hold for 10 seconds, release. 5 repetitions
  4. Stretch the muscle by pushing your jaw towards the opposite side. Hold for 10 seconds. 5 repetitions

Atrophied side (the finer one):

  1. Place a thick pen or a chewing stick between your teeth on that side
  2. Clench for 5 seconds, release for 5 seconds. 15 repetitions
  3. Chew gum on that side only for 5 minutes a day

Frequency: every day, ideally in the evening. The first results are visible in 3 to 4 weeks.

Exercise 2 — Evening out the cheekbones

Target: uneven cheekbones (one flatter, the other more prominent)

Cheekbones are made up of the zygomatic bone (which cannot be changed) and the zygomatic muscle (which can). Strengthening the zygomatic muscle on the less prominent side can visually offset the difference.

The protocol:

  1. Smile lifting only one cheek — the cheek on the "weak" side. Keep the other side neutral. Hold for 10 seconds. 10 repetitions
  2. Place a finger on the cheekbone on the weak side. Smile against the resistance of the finger. 10 contractions of 5 seconds
  3. Puff out only the cheek on the weak side (keep the other flat). Hold for 10 seconds. 10 repetitions

These exercises are harder than they look. Your brain is used to activating both sides at once. Isolating one side takes concentration and practice.

Tip: do the exercise in front of a mirror to check that you really are activating only one side.

Exercise 3 — Correcting an uneven smile

Target: one corner of the mouth lifting higher than the other when you smile

An uneven smile is one of the most noticed asymmetries. It is caused by an imbalance between the zygomatic and risorius muscles on either side.

The protocol:

  1. Place the index finger of each hand on each corner of your mouth
  2. Smile slowly, watching in the mirror which side lifts first
  3. Hold back the corner on the "strong" side (with your finger) and let only the weak side lift. 10 repetitions of 5 seconds
  4. Then smile on both sides at once, concentrating so that both corners rise at the same speed and to the same height. 10 slow repetitions

This exercise is as much neuromuscular as muscular. You are teaching your brain to send a symmetrical signal again. Progress is slow but real: allow 4 to 6 weeks for a noticeable change.

Exercise 4 — Lifting a drooping brow

Target: one brow sitting lower than the other

A "drooping" brow is often the result of weakness in the frontalis muscle on that side, or of a habit (raising one brow only, frowning asymmetrically).

The protocol:

  1. Place the palm of your hand on the forehead on the side of the higher brow (to lock it in place)
  2. Raise only the brow on the lower side. Hold at the top for 10 seconds. 10 repetitions
  3. Place two fingers just above the lower brow. Press lightly downwards. Try to raise the brow against the resistance. 10 contractions of 5 seconds
  4. Finish by gently tapping the area above the lower brow for 20 seconds (to stimulate circulation and tone)

Important: during the exercises, check in the mirror that you are not compensating by creasing your forehead or contracting the other side. The goal is muscular isolation.

Exercise 5 — Harmonising the jawline

Target: an uneven jawline (one side more defined than the other)

This exercise combines muscle strengthening and drainage to refine the "heavy" side and tone the "slack" side.

The protocol:

  1. Turn your head 45° to the right. Push your jaw forward and up. Hold for 10 seconds. The platysma muscle (neck) should tighten. 5 repetitions
  2. Same movement at 45° to the left. 5 repetitions
  3. Compare how the two sides feel. The "weaker" side gets 5 extra repetitions
  4. Finish with drainage: from the chin towards each ear, smoothing along the jaw with your knuckles. 10 passes on each side, more firmly on the "puffy" side (if there is water retention)

Exercise 6 — Differential drainage

Target: one side of the face puffier than the other (asymmetrical water retention)

When asymmetry is partly caused by uneven lymphatic stagnation — one side puffier on waking, one cheek feeling "heavier" — targeted drainage can rebalance the volumes.

The protocol:

  1. Start by opening the nodes on both sides: 10 downward circles behind each ear, then 5 sweeps towards the collarbones
  2. Drain the puffy side: with your fingers or a soft-bristled brush, make 20 sweeps from the centre of the face towards the ear, passing over the cheekbone. Light pressure, always in the same direction
  3. Drain the normal side: only 10 sweeps (half as many) — the aim is to clear the excess from the puffy side, not to dehydrate the normal side
  4. Close the drainage: 10 downward circles behind each ear + 5 sweeps towards the collarbones

The best moment: first thing in the morning, when asymmetry from water retention is at its most visible. The effect is immediate and lasts several hours.

Your daily rebalancing routine — 8 minutes

You do not need to do all 6 exercises every day. Adapt the routine to your specific imbalances.

Every morning (3 minutes):

  • Differential drainage (exercise 6) — 2 minutes
  • 1 targeted strengthening exercise (the most relevant to your asymmetry) — 1 minute

Every evening (5 minutes):

  • Rebalancing the masseter (exercise 1) — 2 minutes
  • 2 strengthening/correction exercises (alternate each evening) — 3 minutes

Progression:

  • Weeks 1-2: learning the movements, one-sided coordination
  • Weeks 3-4: the exercises become fluid, the first differences are felt (less tension on one side, better tone on the other)
  • Weeks 5-8: results visible in photos. Functional asymmetry decreases by 20 to 40% according to face yoga studies
  • Month 3+: the rebalancing stabilises, switch to a maintenance routine (3-4 times a week)

The habits that deepen asymmetry

Exercises correct, but daily habits prevent. Without changing those behaviours, rebalancing will feel like painting the Forth Bridge.

Alternate the side you chew on. This is the single most impactful correction. If you have chewed on the right for 20 years, it will take conscious effort to bring the left side in. Start by chewing the first few mouthfuls on the weak side before switching to your usual one.

Alternate your sleeping position. If you always sleep on your left side, try sleeping on your back (a cervical pillow helps) or alternate every other night. A silk pillowcase also reduces tissue compression.

Watch your working posture. If your screen is off to the right, your head turns slightly right all day long — which contracts the muscles on one side and slackens those on the other. Centre your screen.

Pay attention to your expressions. Raising one brow, smiling crookedly, resting your chin in one hand — these unconscious habits, repeated thousands of times, deepen asymmetry. Awareness is the first step to change.

Manage stress. Bruxism (teeth clenching, especially at night) is one of the leading causes of jaw asymmetry. A night guard prescribed by a dentist protects the teeth and reduces masseter hypertrophy.

Frequently asked questions

Can exercises completely correct facial asymmetry?

They can correct the functional component of asymmetry, not the structural one. Muscular asymmetry, uneven water retention and unbalanced tension all respond well to exercise. Bone asymmetry (jaw, cheekbones, eye sockets) can only be changed by surgery. In practice, most visible asymmetries have a strong functional component — so exercises produce real, measurable improvements.

How long does it take to see results?

Differential drainage produces a visible effect from the very first session (reduced puffiness). Muscular results appear after 4 to 8 weeks of daily practice. Take front-facing photos, in identical lighting, every week. Photo comparison is more reliable than the mirror, because our visual perception unconsciously compensates for asymmetry.

Does facial asymmetry get worse with age?

Yes. Skin ageing rarely affects both sides of the face identically. The side most exposed to the sun loses more collagen. Chewing and sleeping habits accumulate their effects. Gravitational sagging is more pronounced on the side where the skin has lost the most elasticity. Rebalancing exercises slow that progression.

Does face yoga help with asymmetry?

Face yoga strengthens and tones the facial muscles overall. For asymmetry specifically, one-sided exercises are more effective, because they let you work one side more than the other. Face yoga remains an excellent complement for general tone, drainage and preventing sagging.

Can an osteopath correct facial asymmetry?

Craniofacial osteopathy can improve certain asymmetries of functional origin. A qualified osteopath can rebalance tension in the facial muscles and fascia, correct a slight jaw deviation (TMJ) and improve lymphatic drainage.
